Creating some of the most innovative sounds in East Asia’s underground scene, Jambinai are an award-winning post-rock/world music hybrid act that was formed in Seoul, South Korea in 2009 by guitarist and piri (oboe) player Ilwoo Lee, haegum (a fiddle-like instrument) player Bomi Kim, and geomungo (zither) player Eun Youg Sim. After their album “Difference” was released in 2012, Jambinai were quickly snapped up for performances at the World Music Expo (Womex) in Cardiff and South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, once again proving that good bands today don’t need to be hemmed in by one specific style in order to make their mark. This is especially so when the sound made by millennium-old instruments fuses with the distortion created by guitar and electronic loops in an atmosphere that can only be described as highly charged. Ushering Korean traditional music into the 21st century, Jambinai’s stunning sonic compositions mix mesmerizing sounds from the past with elements of folk, metal, and electronic music.
